Biography Of Roy Lichtenstein

His Early Life

Born in 1923, Lichtenstein grew up in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a successful businessman who owned a department store chain. He attended the Horace Mann School for Boys as a child, developing his love for drawing. Lichtenstein attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, where he studied architecture. While there, he studied under Hans Hofmann, a renowned abstract expressionist painter. Also there, he met his first wife, Helen Palmer, whom he married in 1946. They had two children together before divorcing in 1960.

Pop Art

During World War II, Lichtenstein served as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was stationed in Italy and Germany and worked on building airfields and bridges. After the war ended, he returned to New York and began painting. After seeing Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup Cans series, he became interested in pop art.

Who Was Roy Lichtenstein?

After the divorce, Lichtenstein moved to Manhattan and began painting full-time. He became known as one of the “New York School” artists alongside Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and others. His works were often abstractions of everyday objects such as cars, houses, and people.

The Art World in the 1960s

During the 1960s, Lichtenstein’s paintings received more attention than before. It was due to several factors.

After winning the $50,000 Grand Prize at the 1959 Carnegie International Exhibition, he became famous. He was featured in Life magazine in 1961 and was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s first exhibition devoted entirely to Pop Art.

He also was invited to exhibit at the 1964 Venice Biennale.

His Legacy

After he died in 1997, Lichtenstein‘s legacy continued to grow, and many museums and galleries continue to feature his works today. Additionally, his work continues to sell well, and one of his paintings sold for $4.2 million in 2007.
