How to remove stripped screws? A rusty screw, a thread that turns, a rounded or broken screw head!
Many craftsmen and mechanics know the problem with a broken screw. Do you?
Then you know for sure how annoying a stuck screw is. You struggle, but nothing comes of it except that you run out of time.
Is there a right and best way to get the screw out without damaging the work or furniture? Yes, there are even several alternatives.
But frustration-driven violence is by no means one of them; It only increases the problem.
If the head of the screw had not broken off so far, this would most likely be due to the material stress.
Lets us check out how to remove stripped screws the best way here!

Required tools to remove stripped screws
Various tools are needed to loosen the stripped screw:
- Flat file: The cross-section forms a flat rectangle.
- Centre punch: Us a cylindrical pin whose hardened tip makes a slight indentation in the metal.
- Hammer: To sink the grit.
- A sharp metal drill: Used to drill a hole in the broken-off screw.
- Drill: To clamp the metal, drill the broken screw.
- A tap wrench: A jig for the screw extractor.
- Screw extractor: A tool to remove worn or broken-off screws.
- Penetrating oil: To lubricate the stuck screw and make it easier to loosen.

How to remove stripped screws the best way in four easy steps
- If a screw has broken off, the fracture point on the shaft is uneven and has sharp edges. To be able to apply a center punch later, the top of the stump must be smooth and even. Otherwise, it can happen that the center punch and the metal drill will slip then away. Therefore the surface of the fracture is carefully filed flat with a flat file.
- After the surface is getting leveled, use a center punch to create a small hollow, if possible, in the middle of the screw diameter. Place the tool in the middle of the screw diameter and hit it lightly with a hammer until a dent form. It serves to center the metal drill later.
- We must then drill a hole in the screw with a sharp metal drill bit. The diameter of the drill must not be more than half the diameter of the screw. It reduces the risk of damaging the thread of the tight screw. Unscrewing would thus be virtually impossible. The tip of the metal drill bit is now getting placed in the hollow of the center punch. It ensures that the drill is centered and maintains its position during drilling. The drill must get drilled straight to achieve an optimal result. You get the best result by using a box column drill and cutting oil.
- The last step is to fix the tap wrench to the upper end of the screw extractor. To do this, turn the adjustable steel handle until the clamping jaws close around the left-hand extractor. Then the extractor is placed on the hole in the screw and turned anti-clockwise to the left. The screw extractor now tries through its conical tip into the screw.

The friction between the left-handed extractor and the screw is so high that the screw starts to rotate. It releases from an awkward situation. Turn the tap wrench until the broken-off screw removes from the thread.
Suppose the screw may be tough to remove from the workpiece; we can use additional penetrating oil to minimize the friction between the screw stump and the thread. The thin-liquid oil penetrates and lubricates the cracks between the screw and the workpiece.
Household trick: Loosening stripped screws with a rubber band
If the screw doesn’t move, there are many possible solutions. Flatten the screw head, saw a new slot, or drill the screw. Before you tackle these elaborate methods, you should give them a try. In many cases, you can remove stripped screws easily loosened with a rubber band.
- In everyday life, rubber seals keep the lid of preserving jars tightly. But the gums have another feature that you can make use of it.
- You have much more grip in combination with a screwdriver or a cordless screwdriver. And that even if the head is already getting turned around.
- Therefore, place as a thick rubber band as possible on the head of the turned-off screw. With a bit of luck and sensitivity, you can easily loosen the screw with it.

Tips for stripped screws
- Sometimes old screws can get rusty. A rust remover like a penetrating oil can be helpful here. If the rust remover was able to soak in a few days before, it sometimes even solves itself.
- Light hammer blows on the bolt can help loosen the connection between the workpiece and the bolt. Since rust is much more brittle than the steel of the screw, the hammer blow’s vibrations can cause the rust layer to crack.
- All materials start to shrink when it’s cold and expands when it is hot. This process can be getting used if the connection is a metal-to-metal connection. If the workpiece is heated and the screw is cooled, this can help to loosen the bond. We should not use this method on parts prone to cracking.

Even if you do not have any other tool than a screwdriver, you can often solve it with a rubber band.
If all attempts fail, reach for the last possibility and drill out the stripped screw completely.
Place a metal drill bit, whose diameter corresponds to the thread of the screw, on the head of the screw and drill carefully.
The downside of this method and idea is that the hole is bigger afterward and has to fill up with epoxy, or we need to use a larger screw.
