The keto diet works on a simple principle: the body gets hardly any carbohydrates and no sugar. If carbohydrates are missing as an essential nutrient, including sugar, the body starts ketosis’s emergency program. The liver forms a glucose substitute, the ketone body, from fat. Many athletes also rely on the keto diet because the fat reduction makes the muscles more clearly visible under the skin. The muscle areas are then clearly defined. However, the low-carbohydrate diet is hardly suitable for anyone who does endurance sports. For the full and sustained load, the glycogen stores in the muscles must be well filled. Only carbohydrates can achieve it.

The almost medical effect could exert the keto diet in some diseases, complement or support classical therapies. Various studies show that a vegetarian ketogenic diet can slow down brain degradation in Alzheimer’s disease, for example, and reduce the number of seizures in epilepsy – until the patient is seizure-free.

For type 2 diabetes, too, a keto diet can reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Last but not least, cancer patients benefit because the ketone body could block cancer cells.

However, patients should start the keto diet only after consulting with their doctor and following a precise diet plan for any of these diseases.

  3. If you have bile problems, such as gallstones, or if the gallbladder has been removed. Bile is involved in fat digestion. Fat processing is complicated when there is gallbladder disease or no bile, and the amount of fat on the keto diet can become a problem.

Those who belong to one of these three groups do not have to give up this diet in every case. Talk to your doctor. Sometimes it is possible, for example, for heart patients to switch to this form of nutrition if the start is slow and under medical supervision. A Keto diet can be an option for severely overweight heart patients, for example.

Pregnancy And Keto Diet

The question remains whether pregnancy and the keto diet are mutually exclusive. There are for now no scientific studies on this, but in principle, pregnant women are advised against diets. Carbohydrates, fat, and protein are essential and a balanced diet for the baby’s development.

A keto diet is recommended all around for healthy people who want to lose weight. If carried out sensibly, i.e., without too much protein from meat and fish, but instead healthy, vegetable fat, and low-carbohydrate vegetables, we can even use it over a more extended period.

Using a keto diet for medical reasons, such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy, should never be done on your own, but only in consultation with a doctor. And anyone with a diseased heart, bile problems, or elevated blood fat levels would do better to avoid the keto diet and, if in doubt, seek medical advice as to whether a slow reduction in carbohydrates and a moderate increase in vegetable fats is nevertheless an option for them.
