Canadian researchers have achieved a clear result in their apple juice study.

About 650 children were getting examined for the study. They were between six months and five years old.

All these children were getting hospitalized for diarrhea or vomiting. They were also slightly dehydrated.

Some of these children received a conventional apple-flavored electrolyte solution as therapy. The other group received apple juice diluted with water or another drink of their choice.

Treatment was getting considered unsuccessful if any of these events occurred in the following seven days:

  • No improvement in symptoms
  • Renewed visits to the doctors in the hospital
  • Administration of an intravenous electrolyte solution
  • Hospitalization in the hospital
  • Loss of more than 3% weight or fluid
  • Medically ordered the change from one group to the other.

The result: 25% of all treatments with the electrolyte solution failed. Among children treated with apple juice or a drink of their choice, were only 17%.
